The two children are victims of Dr. Moreau's works until they are saved by the true Vanitas. He takes the two children and starts taking care of them. The fake Vanitas confesses through his nightmare his mother's death through his birth and how his father died after a vampire attack. Vanitas later makes Mikhail a vampire due to his desire to live longer as Moreau's work weakened his body but the other Vanitas refuses and remains as a human. The flashback ends and Mikhail meets his adoptive brother again.
Vanitas and Noé are in a bind until an invitation arrives. At their benefactor's, they find they must prove the "Book of Vanitas" can restore a vampire's true name. They try to secure the necessary proof, only to encounter someone else after the book.
