Cheng Shaoshang, left behind by her parents who went off to war, faces challenges from a scheming aunt and struggles with estrangement from her family. Lacking love and security, she is cautious in choosing a marriage partner and meets three suitors: Ling Buyi, the emperor's adopted son; Yuan Shen, a talented figure from Bailu Mountain; and Lou Yao, an aristocrat. Despite a rocky path to love, Shaoshang remains steadfast. The emperor punished Ling Buyi who punished the official secretly. Shaoshang pleaded him to forgive Ling Buyi but The Third Prince insisted to punished Ling Buyi strictly.
The Fifth Princess hold Shaoshang accountable for meeting with The Fifth Prince secretly but Shaoshang denied and insisted that she helped him when he was drowning. In order to helping Shaoshang, Ling Buyi let The Fifth Prince bring him to find the girls who tease Shaoshang.

When Mrs. Cheng learned that her younger brother was arrested, she scolded Cheng Shaoshang for being unfilial. Cheng Shi and his wife supported their daughter. The two recalled that when their daughter was born, she was forced to stay at home with her grandmother due to a fortune-teller.
