Wishbone is a children's television show. The show's title character is a Jack Russell Terrier of the same name. Wishbone lives with his owner Joe Talbot in the fictional modern town of Oakdale, Texas. He daydreams about being the lead character of stories from classic literature He was known as "the little dog with a big imagination". Only the viewers and the characters in his daydreams can hear Wishbone speak. The characters from his daydreams see Wishbone as whatever famous character he is currently portraying and not as a dog.

The full moon is out and Wishbone goes 'loony', burying everything in sight. Sam is accused of stealing a ring. And Wishbone alternatively sees himself as Franklin Blake in 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Collins.
Joe, Samantha, and David seek help from Ellen (Joe's mother), and neighbor Wanda, who is leader of the local historical society, in the mystery of the man digging up the unknown grave in the park; Wishbone continues as Tom Sawyer.
Joe can't find the nerve to ask Sarah to the dance, so he gets David to ask her for him. But David and Sarah really hit it off, and Joe feels betrayed. Wishbone, as John Alden in "The Courtship of Miles Standish" is asked by Captain Standish to court the orphaned Priscilla for him, with a similar result.
Wishbone becomes a Native American warrior in the Dakota tale told by visiting storyteller Lee Natonabah. Joe and David volunteer to tell their own family stories as well at a story-telling performance, which leads to Joe feeling inadequate in his father's shadow.
